Free the children - understanding children's rights

This morning Years 5 and 6 has an assembly led by Jacob, from WE day, informing the children of their rights. They were informed of how the organisation started and how they are freeing the children from poverty, give them clean water and access to education.

In the UK they help to support children in realising their dreams and how they can change the world.

Key message: all the little steps we take, add up to the big steps we make

1/4 of all children on this planet suffer from stunted growth!
870,000,000 people are malnourished globally!
1 in 8 people who don't have enough food.
Planet earth makes enough food each year to feed THREE planet earths!

How can we help out with global hunger?
We can send them food and create a sustainable solution by stopping the problem before it happens. We can do this by ensuring the countries are better at farming, more crops are grown and ensuring they all know what to do with what they have.

A question he think about before we sign off, if you could change one thing in Bristol what would it be and why?

NSPCC Workshop

Last week Years 5 and 6 received an assembly delivered by the NSPCC, teaching the children how to stay safe and speak out. Following the assembly, today we have received a workshop going into more detail around a variety of topics, discussing how to stay safe and discussing what is acceptable/appropriate and what isn't.

The children have been given a speak out, stay safe kit to take home, please discuss with your children what they have done today and how they can be safe online.

Theatre trip!!

Year 5 today have enjoyed a fantastic trip to The Bristol Hippodrome today where we experienced: life on stage, backstage, below stage and even up with the rigs!! Did you know the Hippodrome was built in 1912? Or that is was designed to look like a ship? Or that The Lion King is the biggest ever show to be performed at the Hippodrome? Or that there are 1954 seats in total and the Lion King had 92 sold out shows?

We also learnt more about Shakespeare and how to differentiate his plays. How you can tell whether a play is a tragedy, comedy or historical are by their titles. If the titles have the name of a character in the title such as: Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet then those character will die. If the play is a comedy then there will be three weddings at the end. Historical plays are based on real people!

Research on Greek and Roman theatre

Today Year 5 have enjoyed having the opportunity to use the new laptops, we have in school, to research the origins of Greek and Roman theatre.

They were excited to be the first class using the new laptops and have complied a great range of notes that will inform their writing next week on the History of Theatre.
